Bringing computer skills to the older person in the community.

Note: All course lessons are of 2 hours duration.

Most courses are offered each term and dependent on volunteer tutor availablity.


INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING- Free for new members - 3 lessons
Using Windows XP or VISTA (in Development) operating system. This course covers the basics from starting your computer, keeping it under control and finally to shutting it down. These and other skills are important knowledge, which will make it easier to understand the computer and the programmes it uses.This course is a prerequisite to most other courses togeather with File & Folder Management.
XP MAINTENANCE - Fee $15 - 2 lessons
This course covers the aspects of maintaining your XP Operating System. Everthing from Deleting temporary files and Cookies to Defrag , to Virus scanning and Windows Updating is covered.
WORD PROCESSING - MS WORD 2003 and 2007 as seperate courses - LEVEL 1 - Fee $30 - 8 lessons
Having completed the introduction course, this is a natural follow-on. Word Processing Level 1 is a prerequisite for most other courses. The course includes writing a letter, changing margins, creating bulleted or numbered lists and saving your document.
WORD PROCESSING - MS WORD 2003 and 2007 as seperate courses - LEVEL 2 - Fee $30 - 8 lessons
For those wishing to advance their word processing skills, this course includes page formatting and learning how to set up tables, a basic database, insert graphics and other advanced skills.
FILE AND FOLDER MANAGEMENT - for XP and VISTA as seperate courses - Fee $15 - 4 lessons
This course is a must for the orderly use of your computer and is a prerequisite to most other courses. Teaching how to sort, store and retrieve information from files and folders.
COMMUNICATIONS - E-mail - Fee $15 - 4 lessons
How to prepare, send and receive e-mail messages, setting up the address book, saving and organizing messages in folders. Also, opening attached files and graphics.
COMMUNICATIONS - Internet - Fee $15 - 4 lessons
Learn about the WORLD WIDE WEB and how to surf. How you work off-line, search for information, save it or print it and lots more.
DATABASE - Fee $30 - 8 lessons
A database is a necessity for those wishing to use their computers to maintain those vast amounts of detail from which precise information can be obtained. You will learn how to create a database, sort the records, and then select specific information to prepare reports.
SPREADSHEETS - Excel - Fee $30 - 8 lessons
A spreadsheet is a useful tool to create a layout or table of information, either alpha or numeric. You will learn how to set up a spreadsheet, make calculations, create graphs and charts representing the data.
GENEALOGY - Legacy / PAF5- Fee $10 - 2 lessons
This is a short course to introduce the basics of researching family history and using the computer to store, edit, and print the family tree.
WINZIP - Fee $5 - one lesson
A short course to show how normal files can be compressed (Zipped) or, more importantly, decompressed (Un-Zipped), particularly files downloaded from the Internet
SCANNING - Fee $15 - 3 lessons
Covers the operation of a scanner, file formats, resolution and simple image enhancements. Also the transfer of pictures into emails etc.
DESIGN WITH WORD - Fee $30 - 8 lessons
Using your word processing skills and MS WORD, this course is designed to introduce simple desktop publishing skills, making greeting cards, calendars, and brochures of various types and formats.
DESKTOP PUBLISHER - Fee $30 - 8 lessons
For those who are into desktop publishing. A software specific course using MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 2003. You will be tutored in all the software's possibilities from inserting text and images into your own designs, to creating greeting cards, to certificates and beyond.
POWER POINT - Fee $25 - 4 lessons
A visual presentation course using MS POWER POINT, for those wishing to make professional slide presentations of data and graphics.
PAINT SHOP PRO - Version 8 - Fees $30 - 6 Lessons
A specific courses for those with either versions of Paint Shop Pro. Covers the software basics in image manipulation and enhancements sufficient for you to experiment further in your own time with this powerful software.
DIGITAL CAMERA - Fee $35 - 5 lessons
If you own or plan to purchase a DC this is the course for you. The course is presented by a local professional photographer and includes some field work Conducted in an open forum situation all basic aspects of using a DC are discussed. If you have a DC then bring it along and learn about all those mysterious functions.
GREETINGS CARDS - Fee $30 - 7 lessons
Using MS Word 2003 this course is designed for you to create your own greetings cards for those special occasions.
CD BURNING - Fee $15 - 2 lessons
How to get the best from your CD-ROM Burner and using NERO EXPRESS 2. Prerequisite is File & Folder Magagement
SOUND EDITING - Fee $15 - 3 lessons
How to transfer those old favourite Vinyl LP records and Cassette Tapes to a CD. Using AUDACITY freeware and NERO EXPRESS 2. Prerequisites are CD BURNING and FILE & Folder Management
WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS - Fee $3
These are held at regular intervals throughout any term. They are conducted in open forums for up to 20 attendees at any one time. Notification is through the Newsletter and on the Learning Centre Notice board. Registration is also made by signing the attendance list at the Learning Centre. Subjects covered include:\ GOOGLE; TRADE ME; WINZIP; PHONE TEXT MESSAGING to mention a few.
